Football: Owen J. Roberts product Ryan Brumfield helps Eastern Michigan get off and running

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Senior running back Ryan Brumfield (Owen J. Roberts) helped make Chris Creighton’s coaching debut at Eastern Michigan a successful one several weeks back.

Brumfield, who finished his scholastic career as the second leading all-time rusher (8,595 yards) in PIAA football history, unleashed a pair of highlight-reel caliber touchdown runs of 16 and 14 yards in the season opener, finishing with 56 yards on 8 rushing attempts as the Eagles pulled out a 31-28 win over Morgan State.

Eastern Michigan, which also has redshirt freshman defensive back Brandon Bossard (Methacton) on its roster, returned to earth last weekend when perennial powerhouse Florida posted a 65-0 romp. Brumfield finished with 13 yards rushing on four attempts and caught one pass for another five yards in the setback to the Gators. Bossard has yet to see any action for the Eagles, who travel to Old Dominion this weekend.

West Virginia

Redshirt junior Terrell Chestnut (Pottsgrove) is the starting left cornerback for the Mountaineers, who rebounded from a 33-23 season-opening loss to third-ranked Alabama by rolling over Towson 54-0 last weekend. Chestnut had one pass break-up in the win after notching 3 tackles (one solo) against the Crimson Tide.

Rutgers

Redshirt sophomore Chris Muller (Boyertown) starts on the offensive line for the high-scoring Scarlet Knights (2-0), who rank 33rd in the nation in points per game (39.5) after posting 397 yards of offense in a 38-25 destruction of Howard last Saturday. Muller and Rutgers face Penn State Saturday (8 p.m.) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Penn State

Redshirt sophomore KS Tyler Yazujian (Spring-Ford) has played in two games as the kick snapper for the unbeaten Nittany Lions (2-0). Owen J. Roberts freshman OL Steve Myers is also on the Penn State roster.

Freshman defensive back Rasaan Stewart (Perkiomen Valley) collected his first collegiate tackle and junior wide receiver Jacob Gribb (Pope John Paul II) saw action in the Wildcats’ 50-6 romp last week over No. 11 Fordham. Villanova is now 1-1 on the season.

Bucknell

Sophomore defensive end R.J. Sheldon (Spring-Ford) saw his first collegiate action on special teams as the Bison improved to 2-0 with a 22-0 blanking of Marist last weekend.

Division III

Ursinus

Junior DE Steve Ambs (Pottsgrove) had 14 tackles (9 solo), two tackles for a loss and one sack while senior DB Matt Glowacki (Spring-Ford) picked up two tackles as the Golden Bears drilled the College of New Jersey, 47-7, in their season-opener last Saturday. Sophomore DB Johnnie Cherneskie (Pope John Paul II, Hill School) had one tackle and senior DB Jeff Endy (Pottstown) saw action for Ursinus, which has 10 PAC-10 products on its roster, including Pottsgrove’s Zach Birch (DL, Soph.) and Anthony Pond (DL, Fr.), Boyertown’s Cody Richmond (RB, Fr.) and Nick Brough (WR, Fr.), Owen J. Roberts’ Matt Raymond (WR, So.) and Spring-Ford’s Chase Stine (OL, Fr.).

Widener

Junior OL Zach Chatman (Upper Perkiomen) started at right guard, fueling an offense that picked up 330 total yards, and junior PK Ryan O’Hara (Spring-Ford) was 1-for-2 on PAT kicks in the Pride’s 19-7 triumph over Rowan last week.

Delaware Valley

Junior LB Rashaad Lighty (Pottstown) was a beast on the defensive side of the ball with two sacks, 3.5 TFL and seven total stops in the Aggies’ 30-20 season-opening win over Montclair State Saturday.

Franklin and Marshall

Junior LT Ryan Ignatovig (Pope John Paul II) got the start on the O-line for the Diplomats in their 28-21 season-opening win over Lebanon Valley. F&M finished with 300 yards of total offense with help from Ignatovig.

Moravian

Senior Jacob McKee (Boyertown) got the start at RT and helped the Greyhounds rack up 442 total yards in a season-opening 33-14 rout of King’s College. Senior DB David Siepietowski (Boyertown) and senior RB Tom Froehlich (Boyertown) picked up one tackle apiece and sophomore DB Sage Reinhart (Pottstown) saw time on special teams for Moravian. For King’s, sophomore TE Jay Thomas (Owen J. Roberts) had two receptions for 38 yards.

Lycoming

Junior OL Eric Bonenberger (Pottsgrove) got playing time in Lycoming’s 42-13 win over Susquehanna last week. Also on the Lycoming roster are freshman RB Eric Heller (Boyertown) and sophomore LB Dan Heinrichs (Upper Perkiomen).

Kenyon

Senior DB Alex McQuiston (Phoenixville) had a game-high 13 tackles and one tackle for a loss in a 29-11 loss to Marietta College.

Gettysburg

Junior WB Travis Andrews (Phoenixville) had one reception for 12 yards in the Bullets’ 33-32 loss to Bridgewater.

Division II

Redshirt junior Mike Nowak (Owen J. Roberts) got the start at left guard in Kutztown’s season-opening 37-26 loss to Slippery Rock. Nowak helped provide good pass protection for QB Chad Barton, who threw for 358 yards and 3 TDs. Redshirt junior LB Sam Funk (Owen J. Roberts) saw action for the Rock, which scored 37 unanswered points to notch the win.

Senior LT Kevin Bohl (Phoenixville) helped Millersville amass 503 yards of total offense in a season-opening 46-44 loss to Livingstone last week. Freshman LB Sene Polamalu (Pottsgrove) picked up 3 tackles and shared a sack for the Marauders, who got playing time on special teams from redshirt sophomore QB J.J. Paige (Spring-Ford) and freshman TE Tyler Zilen (Boyertown).

Virginia Union freshman RB Tate Carter (Spring-Ford) had two carries for five yards in a 12-0 win Saturdy over Siena Heights.
