Boyertown falls just short in district quarterfinal loss

(16) Conestoga 7, (8) Boyertown 6 – The Pioneer Athletic Conference champion Bears staged a late rally with three runs in the seventh inning but it wasn’t enough to erase a poor start in the District 1-6A quarterfinals Friday at Bear Stadium.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Boyertown got RBI-singles from Shayn Horrocks (3-for-4, 2 runs), Mike Martin (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Sam Longacre and had two runners on when Quinn Mason rolled out for the final out.

The loss sends the Bears into district playbacks starting with a Tuesday elimination game with (13) Souderton at Bear Stadium, needing two wins to qualify for the state playoffs as the No. 5 seed from District 1-6A.

The Bears had trailed 7-0 before scoring one in the fourth and two in fifth, getting two innings of hitless, scoreless relief from both Pat Wieand and Nolan Kline to keep the hosts within striking distance.
