Football: Owen J. Roberts' Dylan Frierson Defensive Player of the Week

BUCKTOWN – Owen J. Roberts senior defensive back Dylan Frierson is the Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 10-11.

Frierson saved his best for last during the Wildcats’ 23-14 nonleague victory over Reading last Friday night – picking off a pass and returning in 95 yards for a touchdown to stop a potential game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter.

Though small in stature at 5-foot-7, 155, there’s no denying that Frierson has the ability to come up big at crunch time.

OJR coach Tom Barr is definitely a fan.

“When they were going in to take the lead, I knew we needed a big play,” said Barr. “We needed somebody to step up, and Dylan really stepped up.”

The pick was the second of the season for Frierson, who also has two passes defended to his credit. Frierson is the go-to guy on offense for OJR (1-1) with 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 56 carries this season, with the brunt of that work coming against Reading – 37 carries for 139 yards and 2 TDs.

Despite the heavy workload, Barr doesn’t see any letup in his big-play threat, regardless of which side of the ball he's on.

“He’d been sitting patiently behind Ryan Brumfield the last couple of years, now it’s his turn,” said Barr. “He’s a guy that plays both ways, but his motor’s always running.”
