Football: Pottstown's Corey Baker named Offensive Player of the Week

POTTSTOWN - Pottstown senior running back Corey Baker is the offensive player of the week for Sept. 10-11.

The 6-foot, 180-pound speedster, who also had an interception from his outside linebacker slot and blocked a punt of special teams, found the end zone three times during the Trojans’ 48-0 romp over Penn Wood last Saturday night.

Baker had a pair of rushing touchdowns and was also on the receiving end of a 29-yard TD pass from Sage Reinhart as Pottstown evened its overall slate at 1-1. Baker needed just 9 carries to accumulate 112 yards, his second straight 100-yard plus outing.

For the season he has an eye-popping 10.0 yards per carry (26-260) and has scored five times on the ground. A strong receiving threat out of the backfield, Baker has caught 6 passes for 104 yards (17.3 yard per catch) with two more touchdowns.

“Corey is a special kid,” said Pottstown coach Brett Myers. “You can see it in his eyes – the determination. He’s a kid that wants to achieve.

“After we had lost our opener (36-33 to Pius X), Corey said it would give him and his teammates a greater sense of purpose. When (Mercury sports editor) Don Seeley asked him what he meant by that, he said ‘it just means that we have to work harder.’”
