Girls hoops: Sterling named head coach at Phoenixville

PHOENIXVILLE – The rising Phoenixville girls basketball program will have new leadership and direction this coming season.

Tracey Sterling, who served as an assistant under previous head coach Brian Grashof to help the Phantoms climb to the top of the Pioneer Athletic Conference Frontier Division in the pandemic-truncated 2020-21 season, is the new head coach.

The Phoenixville Area School Board of Directors approved Sterling’s hiring this week on the heels of a 10-6 campaign that included a 9-1 record in the PAC Frontier and a District 1-5A playoff berth. Sterling, a former special educations teacher at Phoenixville who previously served as an assistant at various high schools in Florida before landing in Phoenixville, will bring a familiarity with the student/athletes, the school and the PAC and is expected to hit the ground running amid high expectations.

“We’re thrilled to be given the opportunity to continue to grow the program and build off last season’s success,” Sterling said in a press release issued by the school. “We intend to advance the program while providing our student-athletes the opportunity to succeed on and off the court. I would like to thank the district administration for their faith in me and allowing me to continue to serve this great community.”

Phoenixville, which fell 52-36 as the No. 6 seed to (3) West Chester East in last season’s district playoffs, lost All-PAC Frontier and All-Area (Mercury) players Aubrie Breisblatt (softball and basketball recruit at Division III Neumann), and Nailah Green (field hockey recruit at Division II Lock Haven) to graduation, but will return second team All-Frontier performer and rising senior Dylan McAleer along with a group of girls focused on winning.

“We are excited to welcome coach Sterling as our new head coach,” said Phoenixville Area High School Athletic Director Don Grinstead. “She brings a lot of experience and familiarity to our girls and cares for them as students and people. We look forward to watching the program continue to grow.”
