Golf: Ryan, Brady capture District 1 golf championships

LIMERICK – Norristown junior Josh Ryan, the two-time PAC champion, claimed the District 1-3A boys championship Tuesday with an even par 72 that gave him a two-day total of one-under 143 at Turtle Creek GC.

Ryan extended his lead with birdies at two of his first four holes and later added birdies at No. 12 and No. 13 to hold off Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Dylan Gooneratne and Calen Sanderson of Holy Ghost Prep, that duo finishing 3 shots back at 2-over 146 following a pair of even par 72 rounds Tuesday.

Along with Ryan, the PAC also had three more golfers qualify for the next Monday’s PIAA East Regional at Golden Oaks GC in Fleetwood. Boyertown’s John Engle and Conrad Benford of Owen J. Roberts both finished in a tie for 10th at 9-over 153 after identical rounds of 4-over 76 Tuesday. The other regional spot went to Methacton’s Jeff Cooper, who won in a playoff after tying for 16th with five golfers at 10-over 154.

Also, Pope John Paul II sophomore Paul Brady captured the Boys Class 2A district title with a 5-over 77 Tuesday to finish at 12-over 156, five shots better than runnerup Evan Menz of New Hope-Hope Solebury. New Hope Solebury topped PJP for the team title, 338-342.

In the girls portion of the tournament, Lower Merion freshman Sydney Yermish took the District 1-3A title with a 7-under total of 136 after shooting a 1-under 71 Tuesday. Pennsbury’s Jade Gu was second at 2-over 141.
