Great Valley's Juliana captures PAC championship

GILBERTSVILLE – Lukewarm expectations produced white-hot results for Great Valley senior Liv Juliana at the 2017 Pioneer Athletic Conference Girls Golf Championship Tuesday at Gilbertsville GC.

Staying cool and composed throughout her consistent round, Juliana used that stabilizing mindset to fire an even par 70 and capture the gold medal, one stroke better than defending champion Liddie McCook of Downingtown East.

“I was definitely staying calm, cool and collected,” said Juliana. “I was trying to channel all my emotions through each shot and take it one shot at a time.

“I really wasn’t looking or expecting to win and that helped me stay focused. I wasn't really sure where I stood. But my wedges and my chipping were very good today and that was a big help.”

After shooting a 2-under 33 on the front, Juliana chipped in for birdie at the par-4 fourth hole of the Blue Course during a closing nine of 37 to keep the momentum going. That stroke of good  fortune turned out to be enough to hold off McCook, who won the PAC title last season at Gilbertsville wth an even-par 70.

“I left a couple strokes here and there,” said McCook. “Once I figured out my driver, I was pretty consistent.”

McCook was at even-par 35 on the back after going one-over 36 on the front. She was unable to make up the three-shot deficit at the turn.

Other top 10 finishers from the three Ches-Mont schools that are associate members of the PAC were Grace Hickey (D-West, 3rd), Casey Ruch (D-West, 5th) and Lily Byrne (D-West, tied for 8th).

Finishing in the top 10 among the core PAC schools were Phoenixville's Grace Simonsen (4th, 5-over 75), Boyertown’s Savanna Haas (6th, 8-over 78), Methacton’s Emma Lawrie (tied for 8th, 11-over 81) and Phoenixvile’s Allison Bradley (10th, 13-over 84).

“I started out a little slow on the first four holes,” said Simonsen (pictured below). “After that I started hitting my irons pretty well. I just slowed everything down on my backswing and that seemed to work.”
