Kinetic PT Athlete of the Week: Mikayla Moyer (Boyertown)

Athlete: Mikayla Moyer

School: Boyertown

Sport: Soccer

The week that was: Moyer delivered the game-winning goal with 6:34 left in the second overtime to lead the Bears to a 1-0 victory over Conestoga in the PIAA-Class 4A girls soccer championship match at HersheyPark Stadium Saturday.

Moyer, a junior defender whose last-ditch tackle earlier in the second OT frame deterred Conestoga’s Kristi DeRico on a breakaway attempt, connected on a free kick from the penalty area, lofting home the magical strike into the far post top corner from an impossibly tight angle.

“No words can describe how happy I am right now,” Moyer said on “I was trying to get it in the area so someone could score. And … it ended up dipping in. It ended up diving and I just thought, ‘thank you!’”

Mikayla was also to be thanked for her contributions in Tuesday’s 1-0 state semifinal win over Hempfield. In that taut defensive affair at Harriton, Moyer’s perfectly placed corner kick with 4:11 left in regulation was headed into the net by Camilla Kuever, the junior midfielder who played for Germany’s under-16 national team before arriving in Boyertown this fall as a foreign exchange student.

Moyer and fellow defenders Morgan Kline, Courtney Actis and Emma Elwell were at the top of their respective games during the final week, headlining a flawless effort at the back end that was anchored by senior keeper’s Mattie Gallagher consecutive clean sheets. Gallagher finished with 10 saves in her signature performance Saturday.

“We knew from the beginning that we had skill and could go far, but nobody knows how much it takes to get here,” Moyer said. “But we figured it out, as a family and working together as a team.”
