Softball wrap: Perk Valley sweeps PJP to lock up playoff berth; Pottsgrove wins 7th straight

GRATERFORD – Perkiomen Valley punched its ticket to the PAC-10 Final Four softball tournament next week by sweeping Friday’s doubleheader from Pope John Paul II, winning the opener 3-1 before taking the nightcap 4-2.

The victory gives the Vikings a 12-6 league mark, tied with Boyertown for third place. But PV earned the third seed and a date with Spring-Ford in the semifinals by virtue of its two wins over the Bears. The fourth-seeded Bears, meanwhile, draw regular-season champion Owen J. Roberts in the other part of the semifinal doubleheader Tuesday at Pine Forge, times to be determined.

Tori Marcavage struck out 17 and Brittany Shoemaker homered to lead the Vikings to the Game 1 win. Meg Kugler and Nicole Troisi had two hits apiece in the loss for PJP (8-9), which concludes its PAC-10 regular season at home Monday against Methacton (4 p.m.).

In the nightcap Friday, PV reversed a 2-1 deficit in the fifth inning behind RBI-singles from freshman Nicole Bangert (2-3, 2 RBIs), Kelsey Lewullis (3-4, 2 runs) and Jess White, who worked 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
