Upper Merion bounced by Harrisburg in 5A state opener

(3-1) Harrisburg 62, (1-6) Upper Merion 37 – Jordan Wilson dropped 14 points, Amya Anthoney added 8 and Tymeriah Stanton chipped in with 7 but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings suffered the season-ending loss in the opening round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs Saturday at East Pennsboro High in Enola.

Upper Merion, which finishes 14-14, was within 5 at 17-12 in the second quarter before the Cougars ripped off 12 unanswered points to go up 29-12 at the half. Harrisburg, which faces District 2 champion Abington Heights  the Round of 16 Wednesday, then methodically pulled away in the second half behind an 18-9 edge in the third quarter.

Leading the way for the Cougars (24-3) were Ahmya Woodyard (18 points), Dajahnae Brannon (15 points, 6 rebounds), Jazmin Wright (10 points) and Briaunna McCollough (10 points, 3 treys).
